The East Shepparton Landcare group covers the mixed farming area to the east of the City of Shepparton. Its southern boundary is the Broken River, its eastern boundary is Knights, Grahamvale and Cosgrove Roads, Lemnos and its north boundary is Ford Road. There are many land uses in the area including orchards, dairies, beef and vegetable farms and residential areas. All landholders and residents, young and old, female and male and of whatever background, are invited to participate in Landcare activities. These maybe watertable monitoring, whole farm planning or joint group work. The possibilities are endless.
The East Shepparton Landcare group works very closely with the Ethnic Council of the area along with the Department of Primary Industries. The East Shepparton has a very mixed community diversity. With families’ originating in India, Italy, Greece, Iran, just to name a few.
Educating and instigating change on farm for a better outcome for the landholder and the environment.
Most farms in the region now have whole farm plans with water saving in place on their farms.
Over the past years various landholders have installed ground water bores to reduce the watertable levels.
The group was established to:
- Bring the community together to help deal with salinity, watertable, drainage and environmental problems in the local area
- Foster community awareness of the effects of salinity on the future of agriculture and horticulture in the East Shepparton area
- Encourage landowners to use better water management techniques when irrigating
- Establish a network of test wells to monitor watertable levels and water salinity to give landholder guidance on trends and assist them to take suitable action
- Liaise with relevant Local, State and Federal Government bodies with a view to acquiring the information, expertise and funding required to maintain the sustainable productive capacity sub-surface drainage projects
- Promote whole farm plans to encourage sustainable farming practices
- Develop further goals as the groups sees fit.
Successes so far:
People living in the group area have done many things to address the groups aims. In cooperation with SPC Ardmona, Agriculture Victoria, Goulburn Murray Water, National Landcare Program and others, there are many projects under-way.
These include:
- Watertable monitoring
- Translations of information
- Watertable watch flags installed
- Formation of local community groups
- Community groundwater pumping schemes
- Surface drains
- Irrigation demonstrations
- Workshops, field days and activities
