Informations about East Shepparton Landcare group

The East Shepparton Landcare group covers the mixed farming area to the east of the City of Shepparton. Its southern boundary is the Broken River, its eastern boundary is Knights, Grahamvale and Cosgrove Roads, Lemnos and its north boundary is Ford Road. There are many land uses in the area including orchards, dairies, beef and vegetable farms and residential areas. All landholders and residents, young and old female and male and of whatever background, are invited to participate in Landcare activities. These maybe watertable monitoring, whole farm planning or joint group work. The possibilities are endless.

Why does our group meet?

  • To bring the community together to help deal with salinity, the watertable, drainage and environmental problems in the local area.
  • To foster community awareness of the effects of salinity on the future of agriculture an horticulture in the East Shepparton area.
  • To encourage landowners to use better water management techniques when irrigating.
  • To establish a network of test wells to monitor watertable levels and water salinity to give landholders guidance on trends and assist them to take suitable action.
  • To liaise with relevant local, state and federal government bodies with a view to acquiring the information, expertise and funding required to maintain the sustainable productive capacity of the area.
  • To coordinate the establishment of community sub-surface drainage projects.
  • To promote whole farm plans to encourage sustainable farming practices.
  • To develop further goals as the group sees fit.

Successes so far:
