Goulburn Murray Landcare Network

Goulburn Murray Landcare Network is a voluntary, community run forum, operating within the Shepparton Irrigation Region, located in the Goulburn Broken and North Central Catchments of Victoria. The Goulburn Murray Landcare Network area covers approximately 3000 square kilometers and networks 39 Landcare groups. The Goulburn Murray Landcare Network was formed in 1995 and works closely with the Department of Primary Industries, the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Local Government (City of Greater Shepparton, Moira Shire and the Shire of Campaspe), schools and Landcare groups to achieve sustainable land management within the Shepparton Irrigation Region. 14 years working for the community!

In 1995, a planning application was lodged by Goulburn Murray Water to build the Muckatah Surface Drain and The Broken Creek Improvement Landcare Group was formed. It is a small group of approximately 30 members, primarily farmers. Over 160 objections against the drain were lodged with the Moira Shire.

Bunbartha Kaarimba Landcare Group

The Bunbartha Kaarimba Landcare group came into being in 1990, and was initially concentrating their efforts on depression planting, filling gullies and low lying land. At certain times of the year these areas would become a watercourse and by planting trees and other vegetation this has helped to curb gully erosion and other related problems. There are about 20 financial members of the group and 10 or so of those regularly attend meetings. Most members are all involved in some type of farming whether it be dairy farming or horticulture.

Since forming in 1997, the Congupna Tallygaroopna Landcare group have planted thousands of trees and are slowly changing the landscape of their local area. The group has undertaken a wide variety of projects from community weed control programs to school education days, WaterWatch and large-scale tree planting. East Shepparton

The East Shepparton Landcare group covers the mixed farming area to the east of the City of Shepparton. Its southern boundary is the Broken River, its eastern boundary is Knights, Grahamvale and Cosgrove Roads, Lemnos and its north boundary is Ford Road. There are many land uses in the area including orchards, dairies, beef and vegetable farms and residential areas. All landholders and residents, young and old, female and male and of whatever background, are invited to participate in Landcare activities. These maybe watertable monitoring, whole farm planning or joint group work. The possibilities are endless.

The Echuca Landcare group are an active group based in Echuca. They hold regular meetings and often include a clean up along a section of the Campaspe River within Echuca. The group are part of the Platypus project which monitors sightings of platypus along the Campaspe River. Girgarre Stanhope

Girgarre Stanhope

In June 1986 the Girgarre Salinity Study Group was formed by a group of farmers who had experienced high watertable and salinity problems surrounding the present day Girgarre Evaporation Basin. The aim of forming the group was to get expert advice on solving salinity problems and to explore ways of gaining financial support. Funding was obtained to revegetate around the basin and also to distribute approximately 70,000 trees to district farmers.

This group is activley trying to preserve the our enironment through lobbying goverment, though on-ground activites and by promoting indigenous mangment of Crown Land. Goulburn Valley Tree Group

The Goulburn Valley Tree group (GVTG) held its inaugural meeting on the 13th Septemberr 1984. At he time the group had 18 financila memebers. Over the years the group has built itself up to having 50 volunteers including the Harston CWA, Tatura Primary School parents, Tatura Uniting Church and Sacred Heart Primary School parents all which help with the nursery. This group actively grows native seedlings that are sold to farmers within the district. The group meets most Tuesdays to tend to the nursery.

Harston Community Landcare Group

This group was initially formed in 1998 because of an increasing salinity and drainage problem, contributing to high Watertables it the area. After three years of efforts the group officially registered as a Landcare group in 1991. Harston area comprised of 6,500ha of irrigated farmland south west of Tatura. About 33%of this area is dairy farming country, with the other two-thirds made up of sheep, beef and horticulture. The group is made up of local farmers that are directly involved in agriculture.

Undera Landcare group

The Undera Landcare groups started in 1988 because of concerns by the community with the high Watertables and tree decline in the groups area. Since 1988 landholders have become involved in exploratory drilling, tree planting programs on-farm and an extensive Watertable Watch Program looking a t watertable levels in the area. Undera Landcare groups are keen to not only create an awareness of salinity / high Watertables in the area but to ensure that on ground works are implemented to address the problem.
