History and aims of the group

The Beginning

In  1987, as a response to concerns that the rabbit population had reached almost plague proportions, local landowners were motivated to organise a field day on one of the properties to highlight the approaches available to them in addressing this issue. This was also the first time many landowners had met each other, providing the opportunity to exchange ideas and gain some knowledge of their neighbours.

The prospect of having a co-ordinated approach to solving a problem, learning from those with experience and resources and mixing with others in a social atmosphere formed the basis for a group of landowners that has become Longwood East Landcare Group.

 LEL Today

Longwood East Landcare now has approximately 40 members. Geographically smaller than some other Landcare Groups, there are a large number of small (16-20ha) properties as well as some large grazing properties.

Achievements

Today Longwood East Landcare has achieved an improvement in land management, addressed degradation issues, biodiversity and fostered an increase in sustainability. They have translated a commitment towards the environment into practical action.

Future Challenges

To continue for another 20 years, Longwood East Landcare, along with many other Landcare groups, faces some significant challenges. The need to attract new members with younger, different ideas and the energy to address some of the difficulties ahead and the challenge of overcoming apathy amongst landowners has never been more important. Encouraging new membership, continued attacks on rabbit population, sustained weed eradication and positive approaches to land management will take energy, involvement and dedication from all concerned to move into the future.
